So far 2014 has been the busiest of my life and it's been hard to find time for the hobby.
To balance the quiet, I give you a pictorial of an EPIC +I+munda event that took place in Nottingham very recently, followed by a special get together in Denmark. It is incredible what amazing experiences and friendships this hobby can create.
I'm sure this game will be reported and documented properly else where too. What it really is, is a celebration of the hobby that also involved some random rolling of the dice. But the focus and genius is really on the narrative and the spectacular models and terrain.
Very soon, it's time to talk about the future, and the third installment of my Inquisitor Trilogy. Powered by this inspiring experience.

The gorgeous terrain, together with an insane host of Mechanicus things and marketplace goods built and painted by JB |

More of JB's genius, with Peter's gorgeous rusted gear |
|
JB's robot, with Kari's arco unit, "integrated". |
|
JB's robot II |

Neal's incredible Market Place quarter master. Neal brought an utterly brilliant set of weird, dystopian, war hammer gear. |
|
Tim's Mechanicus models. Wish I had more pictures of these lovelies. Tim teamed up with JB for the game |
|
Johan's Radical =I= and my partner in crime for the day. |
|
Johan's models travelled in style |
|
Peter's classic beauties. Don't have enough photos of these, but they have been well documented elsewhere. |
|
my Alter Daemon, one of two new models I brought - which is pretty pathetic considering what all others did! |
|
Johan's guys advance |
|
Borsus and Curze set up |
|
Silas and crew sneak forward |
|
towards and inevitable clash with JB |
|
Kari's Flagellants versus Silas |

our survivors from a bloody game. |
And then on to Denmark... To meet with Jakob and Stefan
|
Stefan's vintage GD winner |
|
Jakob's Crystal Brush best of show. |

Miracles do happen, Stefan is back to painting! and I'm honored to have one of his to join a few of Jakob's and a few of JBs in my collection :) |
Thank you so much for sharing these. They look like amazing events and I have to admit to a tinge of jealously regarding the exalted company you keep. So much talent in one place.
ReplyDeleteAs always, JB sets the standard that others hope to emulate. I'm in awe of the painting on his robot. It's simply incredible how much interest he gets in the surfaces of what is essentially an all black miniature. I'll be using that photo as inspiration and reference next time I'm painting black armour.
Thanks. It's pretty special.
DeleteI think each individual sets a standard though, and you'd be surprised how much every one benefits and learns from each other. It's fantastic that despite the common nominators and motivations, there are so many distinct styles.
I can only imagine what an experience it must be to get all of this talent in one place.
DeleteI hope you don't think my praise for JB lessens my admiration of the other work on display here. I recognise so many miniatures in these photos from the various blogs I follow. You're all legends in my book and real inspiration for my own humble efforts.
Perfect illustration of what the hobby should be : the gathering of great people with the common denominator of building cool minis and enjoying each others company.
ReplyDeleteAgreed! If only flying over an ocean would not be a necessary evil, these would be more frequent :)
DeleteTell me about it! I live in ...China :D
DeleteInteresting! What's the 40k hobby scene like in China? Can you access Dakka and other forums?
DeleteThe GW scene is starting. It started mostly as foreigner hobby but many locals are joining now. 2 or 3 stores in Shanghai. You can even see girls painting in these stores which is quite rare in my experience. You can access Dakka and the other forum via a VPN.
DeleteLooks awesome mate.
ReplyDeleteEve
Thanks mate!
DeleteAwesome looking game. The terrain in particular is just amazing.
ReplyDeleteI can not decide if I am more jealous about this game or the various BOYL events... I guess that since both are in Nottingham, one could imagine doing it all...
Terrain makes all the difference. I've returned energized and realize I need to share more photos of the terrain I have already built and painted and finish more!
DeleteAmazing. The level of imagination and intricacy on display there just blows my mind. I can't even imagine being in the room with those models, I'd be rendered speechless.
ReplyDeleteIt was fun having other gamers wander to our table and go, "how many points is this?" Only to be told we don't use points and see their cogitators jam completely ;)
DeleteFor us it required considerable effort to actually play a game of sorts, rather than just admire everyone's work!
Certain events permit themselves the luxury of occurring. A magnificent day.
ReplyDeleteIndeed! Such a pleasure to finally meet you!
DeleteLikewise, Migs.
DeleteSo much awesome
ReplyDeletethese miniatures and boards are beyond sexy! love the great grungey rusting on it!
ReplyDeleteThe board really was breathtaking. I've ordered the same tiles for myself.
DeleteMuch awesome. Very rust. Wow.
ReplyDeleteLooks fantastic! And the scenery matches the tone perfectly, as well. Bravo to all.
I'm glad to hear that Stefan is back to painting and I'm hoping he will take up his blog again. His GD entry was always one of my favorites and I still remember some of the other stuff he posted on his yahoo page way back in the day (almost 10 years ago I think). I was very disappointed when he stopped updating his blog just as I had rediscovered him.
ReplyDeleteThe board with all the figures look absolutely inspired, my favorite though has to be the hovering techno-giant!
Stefan promised updates soon :)
DeleteAwesome and inspiring! Thanks for sharing. /Mattias
ReplyDeletecheers!
DeleteLooks like a lot of fun - some great looking minis there too! Love JB's mega robots and your alter demon - great job capturing the "burst from flesh of another" look there.
ReplyDeleteLove Stefan's Wolves too - would love to see some more pics of his recent take on them!
Cheers,
Dante
thanks
DeleteFantastic. Thanks for sharing your inspiration and encouragement to view this as more than just a game, but also as a hobby that can span a lifetime. I especially loved it that you boggled minds by playing "no points" in Nottingham.
ReplyDeleteThanks. What you say is true. Most folks present have been to the hobby decades - from school, to uni to work... And then JB of course, centuries ;)
DeleteSo good I had to do my own blog post to tell others to come and take a look at this! This is exactly what I want my own hobby experience to be. Everything is just stunning, imaginative and above all else - it looks fun! Brilliant stuff
ReplyDeleteThanks! It was a lot of fun and very inspiring. Still feeling the effect and everyone's positive feedback has been a further inspiration!
DeleteLovely write up mate , it was a great game !
ReplyDeleteNeil! It was epic seeing your insane models! An absolute privilege! Cannot wait for next time.
DeleteA stunning game with stunning models. Amazing.
ReplyDeleteYou didn't happen to catch any mention of how JB achieved that dank, yet colorful wash effect on the board did you? I'd love to try and re-create it.
Big pots dilute green brown orange - spread quick with big brush using lots of water - dry - dry brush lightly ochre - spray and splash water on - leave out in sun and rain and mad stuff happens - no finesse - very very fast - some strange effects just appeared ........
ReplyDeleteThat's brilliant. The means are the ends. I will put this to good use. Thanks, JB!
DeleteIt can't get more epic than this, can it?
